Wind damage and hail damage are often discussed together, but they leave different visible signs. High wind can lift, crease, or fully remove roofing materials without the dented, bruised pattern hail typically leaves. Knowing the wind-specific signs helps you describe what you're seeing accurately when you request an inspection.
Visible wind-damage indicators
- Lifted shingles: edges or corners that no longer lie flat against the roof deck.
- Missing shingles: bare patches where a shingle has been fully removed.
- Creased shingles: a visible fold or crease line, often near the shingle's midpoint, where wind has bent the material without tearing it free.
- Exposed fasteners: nail or staple heads visible where a shingle has shifted or partially lifted.
- Damaged ridge caps: the shingles capping the roof's peak are especially exposed to wind uplift and often show damage before the rest of the roof does.
- Displaced flashing: metal flashing around chimneys, vents, or roof edges that has bent, lifted, or separated from the surface it seals.
Interior signs that can follow wind damage
Wind damage doesn't always show up first on the roof itself — sometimes the first sign is a new stain on a ceiling or an attic, appearing after the roof's protective layer has been compromised in a spot you can't easily see from the ground. New or spreading interior water stains after a windy weather event are worth treating as a roof-related signal, even without visible exterior damage.
Why ground-level checks are limited
A ground-level or window view can catch obvious, large-scale damage — missing shingles, an exposed section of decking — but creased shingles, lifted edges, and displaced flashing are frequently only visible up close. Ground-level observation is a reasonable first step to decide whether to request an inspection, not a substitute for one.
When to request an inspection
Request a roof inspection after any high-wind event where you notice one or more of the signs above, or after any windstorm strong enough to move loose outdoor items, snap small tree branches, or generate a local wind advisory.
